Why Alocasias Hate You (And How to Finally Keep Them Alive)

If you have ever owned an Alocasia, you probably know the feeling. You bring home a beautiful plant with dramatic leaves and stunning texture, only to watch it slowly decline while you whisper things like, “I gave you everything.”

Welcome to the club.

Alocasias have a reputation for being dramatic, moody, and downright hateful toward their owners. But the truth is they are not trying to ruin your life. They just have very specific needs, and once you understand them, these plants can actually be surprisingly rewarding to grow.

Let’s talk about why Alocasias seem so difficult and what you can do to finally keep them happy.

The Truth About Alocasias

Alocasias are tropical plants that naturally grow in warm, humid environments with bright filtered light and consistently moist soil. In their native habitat, they experience stable conditions year round.

Your living room is not a tropical rainforest.

Most Alocasia problems happen because their environment changes too much. When something feels off, these plants respond quickly by dropping leaves, stalling growth, or looking generally offended by your existence.

Once you understand what they are asking for, they become much easier to manage.

The Biggest Reasons Alocasias Struggle Indoors

Inconsistent Watering

Alocasias like moisture, but they do not like sitting in soggy soil.

If they stay too wet, the roots can rot. If they dry out too much, they start dropping leaves.

The goal is consistent moisture, not wet soil. Think lightly damp rather than soaked.

A chunky, well draining soil mix makes this much easier to control.

Not Enough Light

One of the biggest mistakes people make with Alocasias is placing them in low light.

They may survive for a while, but they will slowly weaken, stretch, and drop leaves.

These plants thrive in bright indirect light. Many collectors actually grow them under grow lights because it provides the consistent light levels they prefer.

If your plant seems stagnant, light is often the problem.

Poor Soil

Dense potting soil holds too much water and restricts airflow around the roots.

Alocasias love chunky, airy mixes that allow oxygen to reach their root systems.

We at The Wanderleaf Co. have developed our own soil that does just that!!

This kind of mix drains quickly while still holding enough moisture for healthy roots.

Low Humidity

Alocasias evolved in humid environments. While many can adapt to normal indoor humidity, they grow best when humidity is higher.

You do not need a greenhouse, but if your home is extremely dry you may notice:

• Brown edges on leaves

• Slower growth

• Leaves struggling to unfurl

A humidifier, grouping plants together, or using grow cabinets can help if humidity is very low.

Stress From Repotting

Alocasias can be surprisingly sensitive to change. Repotting, shipping, or sudden environmental shifts often trigger leaf drop.

This is normal.

The plant is simply redirecting energy to stabilize itself. As long as the roots are healthy, new growth will eventually follow.

The Secret Most Collectors Learn

Healthy Alocasias are not about perfection. They are about stability.

When light, watering, temperature, and humidity stay relatively consistent, these plants thrive. When conditions swing too much, they react dramatically.

That is why experienced growers focus on creating an environment where the plant can settle in and stay comfortable. Once she is happy...leave her be.

One More Secret: Corms

One of the most exciting things about growing Alocasias is that many plants produce corms, small underground bulbs that can grow into new plants.

If your Alocasia ever struggles, check the soil during repotting. You might discover hidden corms that can grow into your next generation of plants.

Many collectors start their collections this way.

Final Thoughts

Alocasias might have a reputation for being difficult, but once you understand what they want, they become some of the most rewarding plants you can grow. They are my absolute favorite!

They are bold, unique, and endlessly fascinating. And when they finally push out that perfect new leaf, it feels like a small victory every time.
